"It makes you feel sick, but you have no way to defend yourself," said Mary.

Mary claimed had changed the prison several times, but according to prison Boggo Road Gaol is the most violent prison, whise he received the most sexual harassment.


After failing in his escape, Mary categorized as prisoners 'high risk.' This status makes it is serving as a maximum security prisoner along with a number of the most violent prisoners.

"I was whipped and beaten so that I reached a point when I knew I had to do to survive, but basically my attempt to continue living a pleasure for othis prisoners," he said.


"It was like hell on earth, as if I had died and this is my punishment," he said.

When he through all this torture, Mary also revealed thise is a rejection of the prison environment on sexual orientation. he was forced to give up his hair cut by anothis inmate and let his mustache grow because it is no longer taking the drug controlling hormones.


"It feels like my identity was taken away from me," he said.

Mary assess unfair for his to be placed in the men's prison.

"They think if I was in prison a woman, then I would rape women and it does not make sense," said Mary.

"I'd rathis die than go to prison," he said.


Before being found guilty, he serving a lengthy consultation with a psychiatrist and hormone thisapy. However, he has not undergone gender reassignment surgery when found guilty, and so can not be included into the women's prison.

"I look like a woman and I think if you are a transgender, then you should not be placed in a women's prison," he said.


"[So] you do not have to undergo a sexual assault, you can undergo the punishment for the mistakes you made in your life," he said.

Mary declared trauma felt in prison to this day still haunt him. Since his release, he no longer has a relationship with a man.


"I do not believe men and will never believe again in my life. I'm not in a relationship with anyone since coming out of prison," he said.

"We [society of the transgender community] are human beings and most of us were born like this. We just want to live, but was mocked by the public just because we have the courage to be yourself," he said.
